Concrete Masonry Units
Architectural Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are the core building material of masonry structures. They are typically used to describe units displaying any one of several surface finishes that affect the texture of the unit, allowing the structural wall and finished surfaces to be installed in a single step. The appearance of the wall can be varied with the unit size and shape, color of the units and mortar, bond pattern, and surface finish.
The architectural concrete masonry finishes we carry at Yavapai Block are Split Face and Smooth Face. Architectural units comply with the same quality standards as conventional concrete masonry. Since 1966, Yavapai Block Company has been producing concrete block with unmatched quality, consistency, and design. All of Yavapai Block Company’s concrete blocks are manufactured locally at our production facility in Prescott, Arizona.

Architectural CMU Applications
Architectural concrete blocks offer exceptional versatility for both interior and exterior construction. With a wide selection of sizes, shapes, colors, and surface finishes, they make it easy to create distinctive, customized designs across a broad range of applications.
For example, our antique-finish blocks evoke a classic, historical look ideal for courthouses and museums, while our ground face blocks provide a smooth, modern aesthetic well-suited for contemporary offices, schools, and institutional buildings. Below are some of the most common and effective ways architectural blocks are used in various industries:

Below are some of the most common and effective ways architectural blocks are used in various industries:
Exterior Wall Systems
Thanks to their strength, durability, and resistance to fire and harsh weather, architectural blocks are a reliable choice for exterior cladding on both commercial and residential structures. Their resilience makes them ideal for walls exposed to the elements year-round. Additionally, the modular nature of concrete blocks ensures efficient installation, helping to reduce labor time and costs.
Interior & Partition Walls
For interior layouts, concrete masonry units offer a practical and quick solution for building partition walls. They can be reinforced with steel for added load-bearing performance, making them suitable for creating strong, long-lasting interior divisions in commercial, institutional, and residential buildings.
Architectural Accent Bands
Accent bands made of concrete masonry are often integrated into exterior wall designs. These bands can conceal practical elements such as flashing or expansion joints, while also enhancing the wall's visual appeal by introducing contrast in color, texture, or pattern.
Foundations & Basement Construction
Architectural concrete blocks are frequently used for foundational work due to their high structural capacity and resistance to moisture infiltration. Their superior load-bearing strength, compared to traditional poured concrete, makes them ideal for foundation walls and below-grade construction. Their uniform size also speeds up the assembly process and helps reduce construction complexity.
Outdoor & Landscaping Applications
Beyond building walls, architectural blocks serve a wide array of landscaping functions. From garden walls and raised planters to retaining walls and decorative outdoor features, these blocks allow for both aesthetic and functional enhancements. Their consistency in size and availability in numerous finishes help achieve cohesive and polished outdoor designs.
