Concrete Block
Split Face Texture
A split face concrete block is a type of concrete masonry unit (CMU) that has a rough, textured surface on one or more faces. The rough surface can retain water more easily, so proper sealing or drainage planning is important.
The rough face is created by splitting a molded block into two, exposing the inside aggregate. This gives the block a rugged, stone-like appearance. Made from concrete, similar to standard CMUs, split face blocks typically are the same size as a standard cinder block (e.g., 8″x8″x16″).
Uses & Advantages
- Exterior & Interior Walls: Often used for decorative exterior walls, retaining walls, and even interior accent walls.
- Commercial & Institutional Buildings: Popular in schools, municipal buildings, and commercial facilities because of their durability and appearance.
- Load-Bearing Walls: Can be structural or non-structural depending on the design.
- Aesthetic Appeal: More attractive than plain CMUs, no need for additional finishing.
- Durability: Maintains the strength of standard concrete blocks.
- Cost-Effective: Offers a decorative look without added materials like stucco or siding.

Design Flexibility
Split Face Unit Designs
Splitting
The design flexibility lies in its ability to combine structural strength with a distinctive, natural-looking texture. This process involves mechanically splitting a molded concrete unit to expose its rough interior, creating a unique, stone-like surface on one or more faces of the block. Because each split yields a slightly different texture, walls built with these blocks achieve a varied, visually appealing look without the need for additional cladding or finishes. Splitting also allows for customization in block color, size, and pattern, making it a versatile choice for both functional and decorative applications in commercial, institutional, and residential construction.
Curves
The design flexibility of split-faced concrete block extends to curved walls, allowing architects and builders to incorporate smooth, flowing lines into their projects without sacrificing durability or aesthetic appeal. Split-faced blocks can be manufactured or cut to accommodate curves, making them ideal for circular structures, arched features, or serpentine retaining walls. The rough, textured surface of the blocks enhances the visual impact of these curves by adding depth and shadow, creating a striking contrast between form and texture. This adaptability in shaping and layout enables creative freedom in both structural and landscape design, while maintaining the strength and low-maintenance benefits of concrete masonry.
Corners
The design flexibility of split-faced concrete block is especially evident at corners, where specialized corner units or carefully cut blocks allow for clean, continuous transitions without interrupting the textured aesthetic. These blocks can be manufactured with finished split faces on adjacent sides, ensuring that the rugged, stone-like appearance wraps seamlessly around edges. This makes them ideal for both inside and outside corners, maintaining a cohesive look across walls and architectural features. The ability to form sharp, durable corners with split-faced blocks adds to their versatility in a wide range of building designs, from bold, angular facades to detailed entryways and column treatments.
